Create pages

How odd.

Apparently, to create pages (including your own personal page), you have to be marked as an "autoconfirmed" user. I guess this was done to avoid spambots from invading the system (which they often do). Unfortunately, Icannot give you this permission, only User:Dhart and User:Joel Pitt can do that. Thank you Linas, I have asked both of them. 09:46, 28 August 2012 (CDT)
I just deleted about 30 pages of spam no one noticed before. Appearently, modus operendi for the spambots is to create a user, have that user create one page, fill the page with more or less valid text ("how to paint a fence") and then have spam URL's randomly in that text. The valid text fools bayesian anti-spam filters. That user is never re-used, since the spambot figures it will get blocked anyway... hopes that the created page stays behind. One-user-one-page makes cleanup extra-tedious. Linas 10:09, 28 August 2012 (CDT)
I noticed the cleanup in Special:RecentChanges, and noted those pages had not been created in the past day or so. I got so tired of doing spam cleanup on my own mediawiki installations that I blocked new account creation and made it request-only, adding a header to the top of the front page with instructions. You can see an example at the Where are your Key? wiki. The only other thing I'm aware that works right now are math problems in a captcha. I wonder if the captcha currently installed here is working and you're seeing problems from before that? 10:15, 28 August 2012 (CDT)

MATH tag

Hi Alyn, before the upgrade the MATH tag worked. Check out Sandbox. Can you get it working again? Thanks! -dhart (talk) 03:55, 2 October 2012 (CDT)

Wow, this extension was built in to Mediawiki prior to 1.18. TIL, I had no idea so I missed it during the upgrade. I'll fix this right away, thank you for noticing. Will reply here when it is fixed. (talk) 06:38, 2 October 2012 (CDT)
Thank you so much for your patience, dhart. This extension is now installed. I can nearly always guarantee next-weekend turnaround, roughly the timing of this fix. If you need to escalate a problem for faster resolution, please say so and I will endeavor to make it so. I've only looked at the sandbox page; if you encounter any issues please report them to me.
